It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s. For instance, in 1906 Fredericka Sprague, the granddaughter of Frederick Douglass, took classes at the Institute. Known as a portrait and landscape painter, Joseph Margulies (1896-1983) had studios in New York City and Gloucester, Massachusetts. He painted landmarks of New York City and marine scenes of Gloucester and Cape Ann. Born in Vienna, he received his art education at the National Academy of Design, Cooper Union and the Art Students League.
